Artist statement
Shattered Harvest is a glass sculpture that uses the watermelon as a powerful symbol of Palestinian identity, resilience, and struggle. The work explores the contrast between light and dark, both physically through the properties of glass and conceptually through themes of hope and suffering. The sculpture takes the form of a watermelon wedge crafted from glass. Chosen for its strong symbolic connection to Palestine, the watermelon represents cultural identity, endurance, and solidarity. Light passing through the translucent glass creates moments of vibrancy and beauty, reflecting the enduring spirit of a people who continue to persevere despite immense hardship. Covering the exterior of the sculpture are fragments of shattered glass. These broken pieces symbolize the devastating impact of war on Palestinian communities and the fragmentation of countless lives, families, and futures. The sharp, fractured surface contrasts with the luminous interior, creating a visual dialogue between destruction and resilience. The interplay of light and shadow across the broken glass further reinforces this tension, highlighting both loss and the persistence of hope. Through the use of a familiar symbol transformed into a fragile yet enduring material, Shattered Harvest invites viewers to reflect on the human consequences of conflict. The work seeks to honour the strength of those affected by war while drawing attention to the emotional and physical scars left behind. Ultimately, Shattered Harvest stands as a meditation on survival, identity, and the ability of hope to endure even in the face of profound suffering.
