Artist statement
Three River Delta #8 continues my exploration of rivers and deltas, forms that have repeatedly appeared in my work since living in Cambodia.
I use an ink I made from lotus petals collected from Cambodian temples after they have been offered and died. A minimum of twelve months is required to make the ink. Using a freshly cut lotus stalk, it is inked onto the paper. This work contains 3,944 lotus impressions. Through repetition, the marks accumulate and begin to form waterways, tributaries and the shifting edges of the delta.
My background as a passementier and weaver has always involved repetition, pattern and counting. In this work those same processes become my artistic process, where thousands of small individual impressions gradually become a larger landscape.
What you see within this work, I leave to you.
